Connecting to Gatana

Install Gatana into Claude Code, sign in, and get the Gatana plugin for the skills of your organization

In this guide we will install Gatana into Claude Code. When you are done, Claude Code has the tools of every MCP server that your organization connected to Gatana. You see only the tools that your account can use.

Nerd Mode (quickest)

curl -fsSL https://github.com/gatana-ai/gatana/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
gatana install

That is it.

Step 1: Add Gatana to Claude Code

Run this in your terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http gatana https://gatana.ai/mcp

This adds Gatana to the current project. Add --scope user to the command to get Gatana in every project.

Step 2: Sign in

  1. Start Claude Code and run /mcp.
  2. Select gatana, then Authenticate.
  3. Your browser opens. Choose or create your organization.

Step 3: Use the tools

Ask Claude Code something that needs a tool, for example "Which tools do you get from Gatana?". Claude Code lists the tools of your organization.

The connection now shows under Clients & API Keys in the left sidebar of Gatana. There you can see when it was last used, open its audit log, and disconnect it.

Share the setup with one git repository

Write .mcp.json in the project root and commit it. Every member who opens the project gets Gatana, and signs in with their own account.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "gatana": { "type": "http", "url": "https://gatana.ai/mcp" }
  }
}

Other clients

The same URL works in Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, VS Code and every other MCP client. In Gatana, select Install Gatana in the left sidebar. The page shows the steps for your client, with the URL of your organization filled in.

Your agent can do the setup for you. Give it this link and ask it to connect you to Gatana:

https://YOUR_ORG_ID.gatana.ai/api/v1/install.md

YOUR_ORG_ID is the first part of the address of your Gatana dashboard. For https://acme.gatana.ai, the link is https://acme.gatana.ai/api/v1/install.md.

How the sign-in works

OAuth 2.1

Most clients sign in through your browser, as Claude Code does above. The client registers itself. You set up nothing in Gatana first. The first time an app that is not one of Gatana's own signs in, the browser asks you to approve it. Gatana remembers your answer.

Personal access token

A client that cannot open a browser, such as a script or a server, uses a personal access token. Create one under Clients & API Keys. Send it in the Authorization header. A token belongs to one organization, so use it with the URL of your organization:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "gatana": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://YOUR_ORG_ID.gatana.ai/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_PAT_HERE" }
    }
  }
}

Keep the token out of source control. Use OAuth when the client can.

The Gatana plugin

The Gatana plugin gives Claude Code the tools of your gateway, and the skills of your organization. A skill tells Claude how a type of work is done in your organization: how to deploy a service, how to review a pull request. With the plugin, Claude Code checks the skills at the start of a task and follows the skill that applies.

The plugin replaces Step 1. Run this in Claude Code:

/plugin marketplace add gatana-ai/gatana-plugins
/plugin install gatana@gatana

Then run /mcp, select plugin:gatana:gatana, and sign in as in Step 2.

The same plugin exists for the Claude app, Cowork, ChatGPT and Codex. The install steps are in the plugin repository.

An admin can download a plugin made for one organization on the Install Gatana page, and publish it to the Claude organization or the ChatGPT workspace. That plugin connects to the address of your organization, so members do not choose the organization at sign-in.
